If you see a red rash-like area on your child or baby, or if you notice that he or she is scratching what looks like a rash on their skin, you should take them to your doctor be sure that it is not eczema.
If the rash is diagnosed as eczema, the doctor will do tests to determine what type of eczema it is. Different types of eczema will require different treatments.

Eczema can be especially difficult to treat in children and babies because those individuals are more likely to scratch when it itches. And the constant scratching can lead to pain, inflammation, and even infections. And because babies don't understand, they can become very irritable, upset and cry incessantly. This can be extremely upsetting for a parent.
Following are some of the more common treatments for eczema.
For children, keep them cool with cotton clothes.
Keep their nails short, as well.
Be mindful of the food you and your children eat. Some foods can trigger an eczema flare up.
Maintain clean skin by washing it with gentle, fragrance free soap. Avoid harsh detergents and alcohol as this can also start a flare up.
After washing, dab skin with a towel and pat it dry. Never rub the skin vigorously as this may worsen the problem.
Moisturize the skin frequently. Dry skin can aggravate eczema. You can use creams and ointments as means and source of moisture. Emollients are great for dry skin, too. Ask your doctor to recommend a moisturizing product that is right for you.

Your physician may recommend an oral antihistamine medication. Antihistamines reduce inflammation in the body and can relieve the symptoms of eczema. Some antihistamines can cause drowsiness, so ask your doctor before taking them and use them according to the package directions.
If the eczema is severe, your doctor may recommend corticosteroids or topical steroids. These creams can have side effects so only use them as directed by your physician.
